Ideas matter.

The ideas we hold shape our lives and the world around us. Never more than in our present age, ideas are critical to the way our society functions. So what ideas do libertarians typically hold? Many libertarians describe themselves as “socially liberal, fiscally conservative.” But perhaps a better description, striking at the essence of libertarian thought, is “to live and let live.”

Libertarian thought dates back to the Age of Enlightenment. Known then as liberalism, the idea that individual liberty was essential for a happy and prosperous society heavily influenced America’s founding fathers. These ideas have continued to expand and grow since America’s founding, despite many crises in our history.  Libertarians continue to advocate that all people should be free and equal. As a result, we oppose policies that would grant privilege to any special interests.

Because individual liberty is essential for a peaceful society, UNC College Libertarians provides links to resources that explain classically liberal ideas in depth. We hope you will find this information as fascinating and thought-provoking as we do.
