The following is the text of a letter published in the Washington Post, and written by College Libertarian President Alex Lopez:
In his June 24 op-ed column, “Who takes us to war?” Charles Krauthammer says “We need a set of rules governing the legality of any future war. This will allow us to concentrate on the most important question: its wisdom.”
This belief boils down to a naive hope that the president will show a newfound reverence for these proposed rules. The authority to declare war was granted to Congress in the constitutionto put a check on the ability of one person to drag us into war. If we don’t have enough respect for the foundation of our legal system, the Constitution, why would additional laws have any more effect?
Mr. Krauthammer appeals to wisdom, but so do I. Have the wisdom to realize that without a respect for the law, no new law will be the magic pill that finally strikes the perfect balance of authority between Congress and the president.
